‘We the People’ or ‘They the Corporations’

October 3, 2015

Make no mistake; the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC) is using the tools of American democracy to destroy it. It’s purpose is to connect state legislators with corporations to write bills that benefit big business of the 1%, and to ensure they remain in power by create laws that diminish the rights of voters who may oppose their policies.

ALEC has written hundreds of model bills supporting climate denial, school vouchers and charter schools, voter ID laws, private prisons, the exclusion of gun control, and about every other issue under the sun. It supports unbridled "free trade," an de-regulated Wall Street, and the privatization of government functions. In essence, ALEC wants to “exchange” the great American experiment in democracy for an oligarchic state where it rules and you obey.

It is spawning; ALEC now has its hooks in local government with the establishment of the ACCE (American City County Exchange), whose goal is pretty much the same as its "big brother."

Part of ALEC’s success is due to the fact that state legislators are relatively inexpensive to cajole into submission compared to their federal counterparts. City and county council members and candidates come at bargain basement prices. The only thing standing in ALEC’s way is an informed citizenry with informed legislators. That’s where Pledge to Amend comes in.

Let’s use the tools of democracy to actually build one. Ask your friends to join Move to Amend -- share this link by email and on social media: http://movetoamend.org/motion

With an election year ahead, we need to elect local and state officials who understand:

  • Exactly what corporate personhood is and how it is being used to rewrite our Constitution,
  • The First Amendment right to free speech and that money is not political speech.

Our Pledge to Amend serves two purposes: educating candidates and elected officials and putting them on record with their support for the We the People Amendment, and revealing who the ALEC supporters really are.  Through citizen lobbying, bird-dogging, and relationship building with candidates and incumbents, Pledge to Amend is the answer to ALEC and ACCE.

It’s either ‘We the People’ or ‘They the Corporations’. Help us grow our numbers by asking your friends to join Move to Amend -- share this link by email and on social media: http://movetoamend.org/motion and get started dismantling ALEC and ACCE today!
