Building Movements that Speak Truth to Power

January 30, 2013

Last week, the nation celebrated the life of Martin Luther King, Jr. We at Move to Amend draw many useful lessons from the successful campaign led by King and other heroic patriots to fight for civil rights for all Americans.

They understood there are two ways to make change:

  • Negotiate with power, or
  • Build a grassroots movement to take on the power structure and force them to react to you

The Civil Rights leaders chose to build a movement for change. In fact, every amendment to expand human rights has required building a similar movement, and our growing democracy movement is no different.

Citizens United is Just the Tip of the Iceberg

January 20, 2013

It’s been three years since the Supreme Court issued its outrageous decision in Citizens United vs. FEC, overturning the flimsy campaign finance protections afforded under McCain-Feingold law. The case opened the floodgates to billions of dollars perverting our elections, much of it completely unreported, and some amount even coming from foreign corporations and governments. The Court literally legalized bribery, and wealthy individuals and special interests took full advantage of it.

As shameful as that decision is, we must confront the sobering reality that it is only the tip of the iceberg.

Out of the guts of the internet, we find an endless stream of misattributed quotes and made-up stories that end up in chain emails that you eventually receive from your loopy uncle in Texas who's trying to justify right-wing economics or anti-Obama conspiracy theories.

It's just one of the headaches of the Internet Age.

But, there's one quote in particular that's always attributed to an obscure Scottish historian, Sir Alexander Frasier Tytler (as if that gave it great credibility), and it seemed to both make sense and prophecy the end of the American Republic.

Tytler was supposed to have said: "A democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government. It can only exist until the voters discover that they can vote themselves largess of the public treasury. From that time on the majority always votes for the candidates promising the most benefits from the public treasury, with the results that a democracy always collapses over loose fiscal policy, always followed by a dictatorship."
