The Best Defense is a Good Offense

March 1, 2017

"Power can be very addictive and it can be corrosive, and it's important for the media to call to account people who abuse their power."
                                                                                           George W. Bush

You know you're through the looking glass when you wax poetic for George W. Bush. Anything awful is possible under Trump's corporate reign; worse still, awful things happen with overwhelming regularity. Chaos is the new norm.

Move to Amend has been preparing for these days since we launched our Campaign to Legalize Democracy on the day Citizens United was decided. Our analysis concluded that these days would happen either through the collapse of unfettered capitalism, as a response to a growing Democracy movement, or a combination of both.

As the saying goes, the best defense is a good offense. We've been on the offense for real particpatory democracy for all people--not corporations--since day one. In this high-stakes game, our offense has been and remains building a movement to pass the We the People Amendment, and then taking up the challenge of perfecting our democracy so it truly represents the vast and myriad communities knitting our nation together.

Americans are on the defense rejecting Trump's brand of politics, by the millions, in a forceful display of resistance, as well they should be. For those like us, with a longstanding democratic vision of the future, this is a very good and long awaited devlopment in building the movement. Move to Amend supports this activity and encorages our followers to join in non-violent dissent, particularly with those on the frontlines of oppression.

Regrettably, merely saying "NO," to fascism won't stop it. The movement needs a good offense, too. Move to Amend has a vision of the future--authentic democracy--and a plan to get there. We need a movement to realize our goals; one that compels millions to act non-violently, to speak out, to listen, to bear witness and to employ privilege in the service of others. The Campaign to Legalize Democracy removes the corporate element, reforms campaign finance, and opens the door to democractic decision-making by and for We the People.

There are tons of groups out there asking for your dollars. Many are Democratic Party front groups, others are part of the industrial non-profit complex, and there are a few like us, who desperately need financial support for our very survival: member funded, grassroots, volunteer organizations.

A good offense can be made a whole lot better, if we're not wondering if we can afford the travel expenses to speak at rallies and events. Our offense can be made better if we can hire more staff to service our grassroots affiliate groups, create new ones, and meet the growing interest in the Campaign to Legalize Democracy. We can be made better with funds to advertise and promote Move to Amend on social media.

Our vision of We the People working across differences to perfect our democracy, to establish government that places people above profit, the Earth we share above greed, and protects the future for the next generations can only come into being with your financial assistance.

While we defend past acheivements that brought us closer to perfecting our democracy, we must go on the offensive to raise up a human rights oriented democratic vision of the future, and fight like hell for it!
