Constitution Day in Central Park, Honesdale, PA

September 16, 2017

Constitution Day will be celebrated in Central Park, Honesdale on Saturday, September 16 at 1 PM. This free event will be about the rights and freedoms of U.S. citizens as provided in the Constitution, reviewing some of the history behind the development of those rights and freedoms, and looking at some flaws threatening some of those rights and freedoms, brought on by a long series of Supreme Court decisions. All are welcome to attend this Commemoration which is sponsored by the non-partisan group “Wayne Citizens Supporting Democracy,” (WCSD).

Included will be a discussion about fair voting districts, a proposal to address the problem of “gerrymandering” that carves some of our voting districts into odd shapes to suit whichever political party is in power. The unfair process of selective districting subverts true democracy and is used to deny some voters proper representation.

Any school which receives federal funds is required to teach about the Constitution, so WCSD hopes that local teachers will take advantage of this program, encouraging their students to attend. WCSD is also willing to make this presentation available to local schools.

Wayne Citizens Supporting Democracy is an affiliate of the national coalition Move to Amend which has drafted an amendment to the Constitution, stating that inalienable rights belong to human beings only, and that money is not a form of protected free speech under the First Amendment and can be regulated in political campaigns. This amendment would restore the power to the people who are now drowned out by the power of moneyed interests and corporations. A copy of this amendment will be on display at the event, and can also be found at

WCSD meets every first Tuesday of the month at 5:15 PM at the Wayne County Public Library in Honesdale. Among its members are Republicans, Democrats, Greens, and Independents. All are welcome to attend these meetings. (Use of the library’s rooms by WCSD does not constitute an endorsement by the library of WCSD’s policies or beliefs.)
