At the 2014 Greening Up the Mountain-festival, MTA volunteers at the OccupyWNC tent had a captive audience. They were busy explaining to booth visitors how corporations profiteer in the hydraulic fracturing industry--as well as the damage to the water supply, the environment and locally to the all-important tourist industry. People were disturbed enough that they added their names to over seventy online petitions against fracking in WNC, as well as to write their comments against fracking on an equal number of postcards to both our district state senator and to our representative in the state house. These have been mailed. Almost thirty more signed onto the MTA petition and to a local steep slope ordinance protesting any deregulation of its strict limits. This was the third year the MTA-Sylva affiliate has brought its message to the festival.
