February 14, 2019 is Valentine’s Day. It also happens to be the third airing of the event “Democracy Day in Defiance.” I urge the people of this city to take time to show love for their country by taking part in the event. 866 of you signed a petition to get it on the ballot and in November 2013, 1807 of you voted for it: 67%.

To refresh your memories, I have created a website: titled “Democracy Day in Defiance.” It includes the history of our efforts and information about the underlying idea: that corporations are not people and money is not speech.

There are Power Point presentations on the website which will take you through the events which led to corporations gaining “personhood” status and money becoming equated with speech. There is also a Power Point showing data covering everything from wages to health care to student and government debt, all a result of the core problem. The data presented represents the U.S. as a whole and not Defiance specifically, but I believe this accurately reflects the truth about the lives of “We the People” in northwest Ohio.

If you take the time to visit the website and absorb the information presented, you will understand some of the details about how as a country we got to this point. All of you who signed petitions and voted for the initiative knew from your own experience that there was a problem. It took hundreds of years for the problem to develop. We citizens have the responsibility to know the truth so that we can guard and preserve the Republic our founders envisioned.

I urge people to exercise their citizenship by attending the third Democracy Day in Defiance on February 14, 2019 at 6:30 pm in the Council Chambers.
