Do #You Move to Amend?

May 10, 2017

Does corporate personhood piss you off? If it does, you're not alone, I'm right there with you and so are many, many, many others! Today marks the 131st anniversary of Santa Clara County vs. Southern Pacific Railroad and the "birth" of corporate personhood. To highlight this important case, we are launching the #IMoveToAmend campaign.

Our goal is to gain 50 new monthly sustainers by the end of May. We hope that you can help us reach our goal by becoming a Move To Amend monthly sustainer, today.

On May 10, 1886, 131 years ago today, the Supreme Court decided a case called Santa Clara County v Southern Pacific Railroad. This case is cited as the first time that corporations were able to successfully make the argument that the protections of the constitution meant for 'We the People' should apply to them. So this week marks the "birth" of the first corporate person, which was -- no surprise -- a really wealthy railroad company.

Move to Amend is a growing grassroots organization, with affiliates across the nation, working to build the movement to legalize democracy and pass the We the People Amendment (HJR 48). We depend on people like you to keep Move to Amend going.

We’ve seen firsthand the many atrocities caused by corporate personhood. Gerrymandering, worker exploitation, and destruction of wildlife are just a few examples of what happens when corporations are granted human rights. We've also seen what happens when 'We the People' fails to include the voices of marginalized communities -- they continue to be oppressed, exploited and ignored. That's why we're fighting so hard to pass the We the People Amendment and bring forth a true democracy.

Our monthly sustainers are essential to our success -- our goal is to have 50 additional people join us before the end of May. Please help us continue our fight against corporate personhood by becoming a monthly donor and participating in the #IMoveToAmend campaign.

Follow these easy steps to participate:

  1. Click here to sign up as a monthly sustainer. Any amount is great!

  2. Take your photo while holding a sign listing your reason(s) for supporting Move To Amend, start the sign with "#IMoveToAmend because", and then say why you support this cause.

  3. Create a social media post about your donation and include your photo. Be sure to use #IMoveToAmend, include the https://movetoamend.org/monthly link, and encourage your family and friends to support us as a monthly sustainer too!

    Here's mine, as an example:

#IMoveToAmend because we need universal healthcare, not wealthcare! Joing me in donating monthly: https://movetoamend.org/monthly

In order for us to stay on the path towards a true democracy, we rely on individual donors instead of Big Money from corporations, foundations, or political parties. That's why we need people like you! Please click here to become a monthly Move To Amend sustainer.

Thank you for standing with us in this crucial movement.

In solidarity,

Kaitlin Sopoci-Belknap
Move to Amend National Director
