At Cleveland Heights Democracy Day, Citizens Speak Up!
Cleveland Heights will hold its 6th Annual Democracy Day on Thursday, January 17, 2019, at 7:00 p.m. at City Hall, 40 Severance Circle, Cleveland Heights, Ohio 44118.
What happens to democracy when corporations claim constitutional protections that were intended for human persons only? What happens to democracy when billions of untraceable dollars flood our elections and our political system? We have seen the ways that vast wealth and unaccountable corporate power pre-empt and eclipse democratic institutions. This has greatly worsened since the Supreme Court’s Citizens United decision of 2010.
In 2013, Cleveland Heights voters passed, with a 77% YES vote, Issue 32, which supports a 28th amendment to the U.S. Constitution clearly stating that: 1. Only human beings, and not corporate entities are entitled to constitutional rights; 2. Money is not speech, and therefore money in politics can be regulated.
By the ordinance passed by voters, on Democracy Day each year, members of the public are afforded 5 minutes of Free Speech each (no money involved) to address members of Cleveland Heights City Council about the “impact of corporate entities and big money” in elections on our city, our state, and our nation. Free and open to all.
