Constituents Call on Senators Murray and Cantwell to introduce a companion bill to the We the People bill HJR 48 in the Senate
- August 28, 2019, 12 pm
- at the Jackson Federal Building Plaza, 915 2nd Avenue
On August 28th, a coalition of grassroots organizations and constituents will be holding a public demonstration outside the offices of Senators Murray and Cantwell. Hosted by Jefferson County Move to Amend, a local affiliate of the national democracy organization Move to Amend, and Fix Democracy First, the demonstration will feature Rachel Berkson from Rep Jayapal’s office as well as speakers from Move to Amend, Sunrise Movement, Whole Washington, Washington Fair Trade Coalition, OneAmerica, and Backbone Campaign, discussing how corporate power and the influence of money in elections impacts our lives and their work. During the demonstration, a delegation of constituents will be meeting with each Senator’s office to strongly encourage her to introduce the amendment in the Senate.
Washington State passed Initiative 735 in 2016 with 62.8% voter approval, passing in both Western and Eastern Washington and in every congressional district. Initiative 735 called on our Congressional Delegation in Washington State to put forth a Constitutional amendment stating corporations are not people, money is not free speech and political contributions should be made public and allowed to be regulated. Six of Washington’s Federal House Representatives are already co-sponsors of the House bill, HJR 48. Senators Murray and Cantwell have the opportunity to follow through with the voters’ request by introducing the We the People Amendment in the US Senate.
Come join us at the Federal Building in Seattle at 12 noon on Aug. 28th!
