An Important Election: Lake Mills & Waterloo

Dear Editor,

The spring election is an important one for the city of Lake Mills and the town of Waterloo. The people have a choice to vote for change or to continue to allow our government to become more and more corrupt.

When the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in Citizen’s United that money is the equivalent of free speech, they didn’t seem to take into consideration how the majority of Americans lack the huge sums of money to influence our politicians. Our politicians (in both parties) now enter office so beholden to those that donated the big dollars to their campaigns (or the special interests groups that influenced their election) that they have long ceased to represent “the people” – the Congressional Approval Rating of 13 percent bears this out.

Politicians aren’t going to make the changes needed. They won’t get elected without the big donations. The Supreme Court already ruled in the interests of the rich and powerful. We need to make the changes ourselves – and the only method we have available to us is to Move to Amend the Constitution to state that “Corporations and unions are not people and money is not free speech.

Once elections again become about the people, perhaps our politicians can go back to their jobs of representing the people – not continually fund raising for their next election and not continually paying back “favors” with tax payer dollars.
