In her bestselling novel, At the Edge of the Orchard, author Tracy Chevalier wrote, "California is where you get to start over." Californians have the chance to start over when it comes to providing healthcare to our state's population -- "The Healthy California Act" (SB-562) is moving closer to the Governor's desk.
The U.S. is at the bottom of the heap of industrialized countries on healthcare outcomes compared to cost. This nation has prioritized the profits of insurance corporations over the delivery of healthcare to those in need. In a functioning democracy, such a thing would be verboten, which explains why the corporate health insurance industry has become a poster child for corporate rule and the exploitation of Constitutional rights meant for natural persons.
While the U.S. Senate -- in service to their corporate cronies -- is working to take away healthcare from millions of Americans, the California Senate passed a single-payer bill on a 23-14 vote, The bill is now headed to the State Assembly. A new poll shows 70% support for the Medicare-for-All type single-payer system the bill creates.
This single-payer system is a lot less costly for the providers, the patients, and California businesses according to the report, "Economic Analysis of the Healthy California Single-Payer Health Care Proposal (SB 562)," released by the Political Economy Research Institute (PERI) at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. "Healthy California" provides more coverage than most current healthcare policies available in the states, and covers EVERYONE IN CALIFORNIA!
The most important part of passing the Healthy California Act is it will save thousands of lives every year because folks will simply be able to afford to go see a doctor and obtain treatment. Passing this legislation is a major opportunity to provide healthcare with no out of pocket expenses to millions of Americans while overcoming big corporate players more interested in a buck than the health of We the People. Passing this legislation will also :
- Send a message to the rest of the nation that we can do better—a lot better,
- Will prove that a functioning democracy can beat out emerging fascism,
- Will save California $37 billion a year.
The absence of federal leadership on this (and other issues) is stunning. The California grassroots must lead the way to a healthcare system that works for 100% of the people. We can do it if we act together.
Move to Amend is proud to stand with the California Nurses Association and the Healthy California alliance for their work on this important issue, and to call on our members and supporters in California to take action.
The Healthy California Act as a concrete way to remove corporations from the people's business of determining our healthcare system, while helping millions of people get the healthcare we all deserve.
Let’s make this happen!
