Moments and Momentum: We Learned, Lobbied, and Left…with Three New Co-sponsors!

May 21, 2016

On Friday, May 4, 102 of Move to Amend’s affiliate leaders, national leadership, and staff converged in Washington, D.C. for the inaugural Move to Amend Leadership Summit and our first We the People Lobby Day on Monday, May 9.

And we departed D.C. with three new co-sponsors of the We The People Amendment (HJR 48)!

  • Rep. Marcy Kaptur (OH)
  • Rep. Jim McDermott (WA)
  • Rep. Ed Perlmutter (CO)

We thank them and acknowledge their support for the We the People Amendment, which will — when passed — kick-start a people-led democracy. (If you are a constituent, please call or write to thank your representative for their support.)

Thank you to everyone who made calls to your Representatives on We the People Lobby Day to support our in-person visits — it was a great success

Well done, Move to Amend!

Let's keep the momentum up and our base strong -- please become a monthly donor to sustain this critical causeAlready give monthly? (thank you!) Please give an additional donation today to pass the We the People Amendment.

What’s even more amazing?

That's a picture of our crew just before they boarded the bus to Capitol Hill -- and only 3 of them had ever lobbied Congress before!

Undeterred, we developed a lobbying training session as part of the Leadership Summit, which proved valuable for our citizen lobbyists. Our little band deserves big kudos for their outstanding performance and enthusiasm.

Enthusiasm best describes the tenor of the Summit — palpable and contagious.

From sessions on the many tools and resources available to Move to Amend volunteer organizers and how to use them, to deeper discussions on what democracy is, who it represents, and how to achieve it, the shared knowledge, experiences, and sense of community infected the participants with the certain knowledge our mission is a righteous one and couldn’t be more timely.

National Team member George Friday said, “I’ve attended too many conferences and summits to count — all of them intensive — but I have never seen the attendees leave with more energy than they possessed when they arrived — until this one!”

Coming out of our first ever Summit, Move to Amend has a lot of momentum and the energy to sustain itHelp us keep it up by becoming a sustaining donor. If just 1,500 of you contributed $28/month (for the 28th Amendment) - we would make our budget for the year and could focus on the movement organizing, not the fundraising. Won't you please step up today?

This first National Leadership Summit was a big success due to the diligence, sacrifice, and hard work of our excellent staff. They lifted an incredibly heavy load while still performing their regular duties, with no additional compensation, other than our undying gratitude and their commitment to the cause.

Our success was not without bumps in the road. For the patience and understanding exhibited by all when confronted with the inevitable hitches, we thank you.

With our ten-year plan unanimously affirmed (more to come on this soon!) and the elevation of our organizers’ skill sets, Move to Amend is poised to take full advantage of the historical moment in which we find ourselves.

Our plan calls for securing 25 co-sponsors this year. We are more than half way there in less than half of a year — and we are powered up! We just need the juice to keep us going. Please become a sustainer today — or if you already donate monthly, encourage your friends to join you and make an additional donation to support the We the People Amendment.

The moment is now; the momentum is with us. What a waste if funding prevents us from carrying this energy forward. Make a contribution today and help us keep this momentum going strong!

A lot happened in those five days. In the coming weeks, we’ll be sending you more detailed information about the summit, including videos and updates. Until then, we hope the news of three new co-sponsors will serve to assure you that your contributions are always sparingly but effectively spent on the pursuit of passing the We the People Amendment. Please take a minute to contribute today!

With full hearts (and three new co-sponsors),

Daniel Lee, David Cobb, Egberto Willies, George Friday, Jerome Scott, Kaitlin Sopoci-Belknap, Keyan Bliss, Laura Bonham, Ruthi Engelke, Edgar Franks, Virginia Rasmussen

P.S. The Summit would not have been possible without your support of our crowdfunding campaign going in -- thank you! Please step up and join all of us in making a generous monthly donation to Move to Amend, so we can build on the great success of our first ever National Leadership Summit!
