The Overturn Citizens United Act is back in the CA Legislature - We Need Your Help!

March 11, 2016

Here we go again!

SB 1272, The Overturn Citizens United Act, which says the corporations aren't people and money isn't speech, is now SB 254. Californians determined to have our voices heard need to rise up again to insist that our legislators act to Let The People Vote.

Please bear with us to read the entirety of this message as it will outline key aspects of our growing coalition's strategy going forward.

We're asking you to call your two legislators again today to ask them to sign on as a co-author to SB 254, The Overturn Citizens United Act. (Find your legislators here.)

(Those of us who are represented by the current authors Senators Allen & Leno and co-authors, Senators Jackson, Hancock & Weickowski can call them with a message of thanks, and please do - they need to hear that we appreciate their actions on our behalf.)

One of the criticisms the press continues to promote about The Overturn Citizens United Act that was Prop 49 is that the measure was a partisan ploy by a Democratically controlled legislature to drive turnout.  (The LA Times did this again on Friday )Those of us who were there know that it's true there were no Republican votes for SB 1272, but it wasn't for lack of trying on our part.

We'd like to mute this critique in 2016 by adding Republican co-authors and garnering Republican "aye" votes this time around the Capitol.

When 80% of Americans continue to tell pollsters that the democracy crushing Citizens United ruling should be overturned we know that many of those Americans are Republicans - that's just math.

We believe the current political climate may make Republican legislators more responsive to calls from their constituents to act to end the corrupt practices that have "broken our system" as the Republican Presidential frontrunner has said repeatedly.

We also believe that ire at the CA Supreme Court's baseless challenge to the Legislature's authority and their insistence that the Legislature needlessly repeat a perfectly legitimate action and "pass a new bill" may also be a means to encourage Republicans to cast a vote reasserting the authority of the Legislative branch of CA government. (If you don't know who represents you, find those two names here.)

If you can make a few more calls, read on - especially if you live in Matthew Harper's AD 74 in SoCal where there's an opportunity to ask ASM Harper directly to sign on as a co-author.

The first committee stop for SB 254 will be in the Assembly Elections & Redistricting Committee chaired by ASM Sebastian Ridley-Thomas of Los Angeles.

The Vice Chair is Republican Matthew Harper who represents Huntington Beach, Newport Beach, Laguna Beach and much of the South Bay.

The other Republican on the E & R Committee is ASM Travis Allen from neighboring SoCal AD 72 (Huntington Beach, Garden Grove, Seal Beach and more.)

The other E & R members are Mike Gatto, Richard GordonKevin Mullin, Adrin Nazarian.

In their capacity as E & R committee members all Californians can call these to Assembly members to ask for their "aye" votes in committee and for co-authorship.

We have a long way to go to Restore the Overturn Citizens United Act to the 2016 California ballot, but we're off to a very strong start and with your continued willingness to act, we will be unstoppable.

Thank you for taking action today!
