Petition to the Bend City Council
To urge an amendment to the U.S. Constitution to ensure that
Corporations do not have the same rights as people.
Prepared by Move to Amend of Central Oregon
I urge the City Council of Bend to adopt and act on the following resolution:
Be it hereby resolved that the City Council of Bend, Oregon, expresses strong support for an amendment to the United States Constitution that ensures that corporations are not people and that money cannot be considered speech. Be it further resolved that the Council will relay this resolution to the Oregon Congressional delegation, urging them to advocate within Congress to pass such a resolution and send it to the states for ratification. The effect of such an amendment would be to overturn the Supreme Court’s disastrous Citizens United decision of 2010. That decision granted corporations and other large entities the right to spend unlimited funds to support candidates favorable to their interests.
These actions should reflect the following principles: (1) Although corporations make valuable contributions to our society, they are entities and not to be equated with human beings nor granted the same rights under the Constitution. (2) Money is property, not protected under the right of free speech. (3) Federal, state and local government laws regulating allowable giving by corporations and other entities are essential to the preservation of our democracy.
