Stampede to Amend Fact Sheet

  • Stampede to Amend is a grassroots campaign in which people across the country will stamp messages on our nation's currency in support of passing a constitutional amendment to overturn the Citizens United ruling and get corporations out of the Constitution and big money out of politics.
  • From October-December 2012, Move to Amend will hit the road on a nation-wide tour, visiting nearly 50 cities and towns across the USA with the "Amend-O-Matic", spreading the word about the movement to amend and how people can get involved.
  • The "Amend-O-Matic" is part art spectacle, part money-stamping machine, part road-worthy vehicle, and will allow participants to insert their dollar bills to be printed with messages calling for an amendment to the US Constitution. Slogans to be printed include, "Corporations are not people," "Money is not speech;" and "Not to be used for bribing politicians."
  • Move To Amend is a broad-based grassroots coalition of diverse groups dedicated to ending the illegitimate legal doctrine that prevents the American people from ruling ourselves. Move To Amend is endorsed by hundreds of organizations, including several Occupy groups, and over 235,000 people who have signed the Move To Amend “Petition to Amend.”
  • The Move To Amend coalition is working to grow grassroots support for a constitutional amendment that clearly and unequivocally states that: 1) Rights recognized under the Constitution belong to human beings only, and not to artificial legal entities such as corporations, labor unions or political action committees; and 2) Political campaign spending is not a form of speech protected under the First Amendment.
  • The Citizens United decision allows corporate money to drown out the voice of the people. In the wake of this decision, over $2 billion is expected to be spent to influence the 2012 presidential election. Polling indicates that almost 80% of Americans are in favor of overturning this decision, with a majority supporting an amendment to establish that corporations are not entitled to Constitutional rights.
  • Corporations dominate the political process through political action committees (PACs), high-paid lobbyists, and multi-million dollar contributions by the wealthy 1%. On the most critical issues that impact our everyday lives - climate change, health care, financial regulation of Wall Street so that Main Street can thrive - corporate interests are defeating critical policies to protect We the People and the planet.
  • Stampede to Amend is a joint project of the Move To Amend coalition and the StampStampede, a project started by Ben Cohen, co-founder of Ben and Jerry's Ice Cream.
