Upcoming Events and info on city council campaign finance resolution

February 2, 2016

Move to Amend is a nationwide movement to save democracy by clearly establishing money is not speech and corporations are not people.

Locally in Cleveland we have been working to put Move to Amend on the Cleveland ballot next year in 2016! We are making progress with 2500+ signatures and will continue to get more with your help!

Come to our meeting this Monday, Feb 8th

Our next meeting will be Monday, February 8th at 5:30pm at MLK Jr Library, 1962 Stokes Boulevard (between Euclid and Chester Ave near University Circle) to organize for the upcoming primary election and spring events. We will also be discussing a new city council proposal to increase campaign donations (see below).

Cleveland City Council delays vote on campaign donation cap after questions raised

Our meeting next Monday is all more timely given this week’s proposal before Cleveland City Council to increase political contribution limits 900% for candidates running for Mayor (from $1000 to $10,000), while proposed contribution limits to council candidates would “only” increase 50%. Such a shocking proposal is an indication of the desire of the city’s power elite to appeal to funders more than voters — an  interest in trying to “organize” money for their campaign rather than organize people in neighborhoods at the grassroots (which doesn’t require huge sums of cash). Of course, even larger political “donations” from corporations and wealthy individuals comes with expectations that the contributor will receive something in return. Since most Clevelanders can’t afford contributing anywhere near $1000 to political candidates, let alone $10,000, these proposed contribution increases further drowns out the voices of Clevelanders at the expense of the wealthy and corporations.

It’s just another example, a local one at that, why we need a Constitutional Amendment that places the rights of people above that of corporations and money — and another reason to show up to our meeting Monday night!

Move to Amend will be at Kurentovanje this Saturday!

Kurentovanje will be this Saturday, February 6th from 11am-6pm at East 64th St. & St. Clair Ave.

Kurentovanje (koo-rahn-toh-VAHN-yay) is the most popular carnival event in Slovenia and the central figure of the carnival, the Kurent, is believed to chase away winter and usher in spring. The day is filled with costumes, a parade, ethnic food and drink, heritage and fuzzy Kurents.

We will have Cleveland Move to Amend volunteers collecting signatures at the Kurentovanje parade. Join us!
Come sign our petition or let us know if you'd be interested in helping out!

Save the date for March 15th!

We will be collecting signatures during Ohio's primary election! We got 1000+ signatures on the last election day!

Join us for a few hours on 3/15 so we can get another 1000 signatures!

Did you get your 6 signatures for the 6th Anniversary of Citizens United?

To show our dissatisfaction with the Citizens United decision we asked you to get 6 signatures on the 6th anniversary of the decision on January 21st. Hope you got your signatures but if not there is still time... If everyone with a petition got 6 we'd have over 600 additional signatures! That would put us at over 3,000 total!
