Victory for Californians!

June 9, 2016

The Golden State will have the opportunity to join 16 states in the movement to amend the Constitution to overturn Citizens United and make clear corporations do not have Constitutional rights after Governor Jerry Brown approved the Overturn Citizens United Act for the November ballot!

We overcame significant hurdles and big opponents to win the right to weigh-in on this issue. The vote should have happened 2014 when "Proposition 49" passed the state legislature and governor the first time, but big corporate interests moved quickly to beg the CA Supreme Court to rule the measure invalid -- an unprecedented request which the Court granted for the first time in CA History! Despite realizing its error in judgement, the Court failed to correct its mistake and required our coalition to repeat the process through all over again.

It took two years, 8 votes of the legislature, and tens of thousands of letters, emails, and phone calls to win this moment in November -- and grow the movement for real democracy.

Help keep this momentum going by becoming donating to Move to Amend today!

State Senator Ben Allen (the bill's champion) was correct in saying, "Citizens United is but one of the many U.S. Supreme Court rulings that have made effective campaign finance reform more difficult." The Court's removal of a valid ballot measure at the request of corporate interests stands as a stark testament to the power of "corporate persons" to use constitutional rights -- granted over a century of Supreme Court decisions -- to override the democratic process and silence the voices of real people.

But the We the People retain the right to weigh in on important issues as corporate personhood and excessive corporate influence. And we will not be silenced. Help us keep the momentum going by donating to Move to Amend!

This victory comes in no small part to the dedicated work of Move to Amend staff and volunteers, as well as a statewide coalition of local and national democracy advocates including Money Out Voters In, Free Speech For People, and Common Cause. But this campaign doesn't end until November 8th, when voters in California (and Washington!) will have their say and tell their representatives where they stand.

Now is the time to seize the moment. Help us push forward by donating to Move to Amend

An overwhelming majority of Americans share the sentiment that corporations should not have the same rights as people, and big money in politics should be removed. Now the people of California have the opportunity to join the democracy movement, and make clear where they stand.

The path is set towards the We The People Amendment. Now is the time to make a generous donation and help us push to pass a 28th amendment!
