We Did It!

July 21, 2016

The City of Cleveland notified us officially that we collected more than 5000 valid signatures on our petition! The petition calls on Congress to pass a Constitutional Amendment affirming that only human beings, not corporate entities, possess constitutional rights and that money is not free speech and can be regulated in political elections! It also would establish a city-sponsored public hearing every other year on the impact of corporations and big money in elections on our lives, communities and city.

Thanks to all of you who signed the petition, and especially to those who circulated. It was an incredible all-volunteer effort!

The 5600-plus signatures now triggers action by City Council. We hope Council will expedite their normal procedure at their August 10 special summer meeting and vote to place the petition on the November ballot.

We are communicating with several council members in hopes that this will happen. We’ll have more information for you next week (after the RNC is over) — including how your help may be needed to lobby Cleveland City Council members to support placing our citizen initiative on the ballot.

In the meantime, savor the victory! Thank you very much for your support. This simply would not have been possible without the help of the many supporters and petitioners!
